Yesterday I woke up to sunshine and inspiration.
Two of my favorite things to wake up to!
Everyone was still snuggled softly in their beds, so I decided to surprise them with french toast. I grabbed a Betty Crocker cookbook that we were given when we were married almost nine years ago. In fact, it was called the Bridal Edition.
I picked the easiest recipe listed for french toast, but also noticed it was for 8 pieces. Well, my family of five can eat double that so I decided to tinker with the recipe a bit.
We were not disappointed.
I used a few organic ingredients, and I think it really added to the overall taste.
French Toast
4 large eggs (organic)
1 1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons organic turbinado sugar (you can use white sugar)
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon (you can add more or less to your tastes)
10-12 slices bread
1 jar pure maple syrup (naturally organic)
Beat eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt with wire whisk until smooth. Heat griddle to 375 degrees, and grease griddle if necessary. (I did not)
Dip bread into egg mixture (do not soak it) then place on griddle. Cook 2-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
Serve with room temperature butter and syrup and watch your family's faces light up with joy.
We have made french toast many, many times before, but this version is really, really, really good. I have never added vanilla or sugar to the milk mixture before... such a 'UFF-DA' moment! (Sorry, I am part Norwegian)
And so easy!
Seriously... try it! You will not be disappointed.
And now I am off to enjoy the rest of our Sunday evening. My dear sweet amazing hubby surprised me with a very special gift the other day, and although I am still getting used to it I cant wait to share it with you and tell you how it will change our relationship!
Be blessed!
Can't wait to find out what the surprise your hubby gave you is. What a sweetheart he must be! Your french toast looks yummy and I love that you said "Uff-Da" :)

Yummy! I had french toast this morning too. I make mine with eggs, milk, cinnamon, touch of white sugar, touch of brown sugar, vanilla AND butter flavoring. Once it was cooked I put sliced bananas on top, and then some syrup, YUMMY!
I used to be married to a Norwegian! My Jilly is half Norwegian. I can say a few things and count to 10, but thats about it. Jilly's dad only speaks Norwegian to her.

Must be french toast season. ;-) I made some this morning, too. I actually used pumpkin pie spice and brown sugar in my egg/milk mixture and oh. my. word. was it AMAZING!! I also used a whole grain bread and that added another layer of flavor. And I also soaked the bread for a few minutes, too, and cooked it in a bit of butter, which I don't usually do. It was the best french toast I'd ever made. Didn't even need syrup!
Hubby surprises are the best! :-) Have a good night!!

That's almost exactly what I made the other morning but used Chalkah bread and made an apple compote as a topping and it was the best!! Yum!!

That definitely looks easy enough for me to try! Once I am feeling better, I think I will give it a try. Blessings to you. :)

Oh, I love French toast! We will have to try this recipe! Any good outlets for inexpensive maple syrup? Should I find a tree to tap?
***This gift...is it a va-va-va-voom sort of deal??? hehe... Can't wait to find out!

There's something else we have in common...we are both part Norwegian! lol!
I am thrilled for you that you're feeling better. It's evident in your energetic posts. My family loves french toast too, so I'll have to try this recipe out - thanks for sharing it!

I am so glad you are feeling better and that the baby is just fine. I have been thinking about you and praying that you will have some relief. Waking up to sunshine and inspiration sounds like things are going in the right direction. :)

I thought that everyone used cinnamon and vanilla in their french toast...guess I was wrong! Now I want some french toast. Maybe we'll do breakfast for dinner. Thanks for the idea!

Yum! I love French toast. Sadly, my other half does not. This is really close to what I make, although I have never added salt. I'm going to have to try that.
I'm guessing a new camera something????

One addition to try out that will make this even better is bake yourself some homemade Brioche and use that for your bread! You will never have French Toast out again I promise you. I also add a touch of nutmeg to my liquid dredge when making French Toast.

You could bake it, too, about 10 minutes or so on each side at 350. I don't even use the griddle for french toast anymore. I like having my french toast ready at the same time.
That sounds marvelous! I might have to try it with my sister in law in a couple of weeks. She likes to try new things and is much more up to the challenge than I am.
So are you feeling better? I hope so!

I always use vanilla, nutmeg, & cinnamon in my French toast - and I never have to worry abut leftovers! LOL!

I LOVE that Bridal Edition cookbook! I think someone gave it to us when we'd been married, like, 6 years! ;) Everything in it is good and really straight-forward. I love it!
Now, I'm going to have to try these!

We add vanilla and cinnamon to pancake mix too. Sometimes nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice to change it up a bit. SO yummy!
